September 8, 2016 GMT

A new budget approved by Prentiss County supervisors includes a slight tax increase for residents of the fifth district but no increase in the overall county tax rate. The board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the budget and tax levy for the 2016-17 fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. The overall countywide tax rate will remain level at 61.4 mills while the county school district levy remains at 58 mills. Millage for road bonds in each of the county supervisor district also remained level at 3.4 mills for districts one, two and three and 5.5 mills for district four. In the fifth district the road bond millage will increase from 4.5 mills to 5.5 mills. Chancery Clerk David Bubba Pounds said the budget includes few significant changes in spending. All full-time county employees will receive a $50 per month pay increase. The budget also includes an increase in funding for the tax assessor’s office to allow property appraisals to be done by the office instead of contracting them out to a private firm, and funding for upgrades to computers at the circuit clerk’s office.
