R. KELLY BACK IN COURT TODAY IN CHICAGO

CHICAGO (AP) — R&B singer R. Kelly was back in court for a hearing in his sexual abuse case, but this time the focus is not just on R. Kelly, but also on a now famous attorney for the plaintiffs, Michael Avenatti. Avenatti is the lawyer who represented porn star Stormy Daniels in her legal fight against President Trump. Avenatti also represents two of R. Kelly’s accusers. What makes all this interesting is that now Avenatti himself is facing legal troubles — under indictment on embezzlement and extortion charges in California. Now, R. Kelly’s attorney says he’s still waiting for Chicago prosecutors to hand over a videotape that Avenatti says shows the singer having sex with an underage girl. Attorney Steve Greenberg said after a court hearing Tuesday that prosecutors say they will copy the video and turn it over to him. Greenberg is also pressing prosecutors to turn over any communications they had with Avenatti before Avenatti gave them the video. The defense is expected to argue that the two coordinated with each other. R. Kelly’s attorneys hope that that argument will invalidate the charges against the singer.

DON McLEAN HONOR EXTENDED, THEN RESCINDED

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Well, that de-escalated quickly. First, “American Pie” singer Don McLean said he was getting a big-time music award, only to see it pulled away. McLean announced yesterday that he was to get the George and Ira Gershwin Award for lifetime achievement in music, an honor given by the Student Alumni Association at UCLA. But the Portland Press Herald of Maine says the honor’s been snatched back. It appears the UCLA alums didn’t know about a domestic violence case involving McLean and his now-ex-wife. But once it did, it changed its mind. That has irked McLean’s rep, who says it’s “disrespectful” that UCLA withdrew the honor after failing to look into the domestic violence case, which made national news at the time.

“GAME OF THRONES” AND THE CONTROVERSIAL COFFEE CUP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s the biggest TV series going these days. So that has to make the coffee cup gaffe on Sunday’s episode of “Game of Thrones” one of the biggest goof-ups on a TV series ever. By now you’ve heard that, a modern-day coffee cup can be seen on a table in a scene where characters were celebrating a bloody battle by guzzling out of goblets and horns. TV and movie productions have a whole army of people working in what’s known as “continuity” to make sure goof-ups like that don’t happen — but they still do. HBO is using humor to help make the drama over “CoffeeCupGate” go away. In a statement, the network says, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

DISNEY SLATES FOX FILMS, ‘AVATAR’ PUSHED ANOTHER YEAR

NEW YORK (AP) — The long wait for more “Avatar” films will go on a little longer. The Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday laid out its plans for upcoming 20th Century Fox films. James Cameron’s long-delayed “Avatar 2″ will now open in theaters in December 2021 instead of its most recent date of December 2020. The two subsequent “Avatar” sequels will move to 2023 and 2025. Disney said its next batch of “Star Wars” films will begin arriving in theaters in 2022, and then again in 2024 and 2026. A number of Fox films have been delayed. “Ad Astra,” with Brad Pitt, has been pushed to September. “The New Mutants” was pushed from this summer to April next year and Steve Spielberg’s “West Side Story” will open in December next year.

MEGHAN MARKLE DELIVERS

WINDSOR, England (AP) — First-time dad jitters? Or just a poor choice of words? Prince Harry raised eyebrows — royal and otherwise — when he announced the birth of his first child. After his wife Meghan Markle delivered the boy yesterday, Harry went before the TV cameras to tell the world. He referred to his son as “the little thing,” even as he gushed that the boy “is absolutely to die for.” The description of the child as “the little thing” wasn’t the only break with tradition the couple engaged. They didn’t disclose the name of the hospital — and shunned the practice of posing with the baby soon after birth.

AMY SCHUMER DELIVERS HER FIRST BABY

LOS ANGELES (AP) — She’s a comedian — but at times, it seemed there was little to laugh about for Amy Schumer as she carried her first child. She suffered with a condition that caused constant sickness. But she still pressed on, even poking fun at the fact that she and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle were pregnant at the same time. Schumer has given birth, though not with quite as much fanfare as Markle did. Her baby, a boy, arrived Sunday night. Schumer spread the news on Instagram, with an image of her, husband Chris Fischer and the new arrival, referring to their child as “our royal baby.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some of the actors who appeared in John Singleton’s films came to pay tribute to him at his funeral. Among those who attended the private two-hour service yesterday in Los Angeles: Ice Cube, Taraji. P. Henson, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long and Tyrese. Director Ryan Coogler, rapper Ludacris and Hall of Fame footballer Jim Brown also were there, as were Stevie Wonder and Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Singleton died last week at age 51 after a massive stroke. Plans for a public tribute to the Oscar-nominated director are still being worked on.

PAMELA ANDERSON SAYS TREATMENT OF JULIAN ASSANGE IS UNFAIR

LONDON (AP) — Former “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson says Julian Assange “does not deserve to be in a supermax prison” after visiting the WikiLeaks founder behind bars. Assange is in London’s Belmarsh Prison serving a 50-week sentence for jumping bail in 2012. He is also being held on an extradition warrant to the United States for allegedly hacking into a Pentagon computer. The actress, who has defended Assange before, told reporters Tuesday that he is innocent and being treated unfairly. “It was great to see him, but this is just misrule of law in operation. It is absolute shock that he has not been able to get out of his cell,” she said. Assange says he is a journalist who has done nothing wrong. He is fighting extradition to the U.S.

CBS REVAMPS NEWS TEAM

UNDATED (AP) — Though they are no longer on the same show, Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell insist they weren’t split up because they couldn’t get along. Under a shakeup announced yesterday, CBS posted Norah O’Donnell as the new anchor of the “CBS Evening News.” She’ll also have the title of managing editor. King will stay on with a pair of co-hosts to be named later on the network’s morning show. Both women insist there was no beef between them, despite persistent reports that said otherwise. Both women note those kinds of issues never seem to be raised when two men are paired on a show.

TIGER WOODS RECEIVES PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM

WASHINGTON (AP) — It was a side of Tiger Woods the public doesn’t usually see. But the reigning Masters champ let some of his inner feelings show when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom yesterday. He spoke about his parents and took time to thank those who had his back over the years, especially as he struggled with health, drug and marital issues. To those closest to him, Woods said, “You’ve seen the good and the bad, the highs and lows.” He also thanked them, saying he wouldn’t be where he is today without their help and support.

KENTUCKY DERBY - TV RATINGS

UNDATED (AP) — The action at the Kentucky Derby takes about two minutes, as the field of horses fly around the track once the gate is flung open. But this year, the most exciting moments came well after the race ended as officials first huddled up, then disqualified the horse that finished first — Maximum Security — and awarded the win to runner-up Country House. The post-race drama is reflected in the TV ratings for the first jewel in horse racing’s Triple Crown. Nielsen reports Saturday’s broadcast averaged 18 million during the actual race — but spiked to 18.5 million for post-race coverage, which included the decision to strip the “winner” of a first-place finish.

COURT TV RETURNS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After some programming and rating tribulations, trials are coming back to Court TV. The channel for legal eagles and jurisprudence junkies is returning to its roots by airing trials again, after more than a decade of toying with various formats. The new Court TV says it will focus on courtroom action pretty much all day, most of the day — and chat about the legal system when courts are dark. Court TV was launched in 1991. It rose in popularity rose during the 1994 Menendez brothers’ trial — and ratings went through the roof with its wall-to-wall coverage of the 1995 O.J. Simpson double-murder trial. Among the new “trials-of-the-century” Court TV hopes to air is the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault case, set to start in New York this fall.
