Akron Beacon Journal names next editor
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — The Akron Beacon Journal has named its next news editor.
Beacon Journal Publisher Bill Albrecht announced Monday that Michael Shearer will take over as editor of the newspaper when current editor Bruce Winges (WING’-ehs) retires March 1.
Albrecht told the newspaper Winges has led the Beacon Journal newsroom during challenging times and Shearer brings “proven leadership.”
Shearer has served the past two years as editor and general manager of the Record-Courier in Kent. At the same time, he also has served as northeastern Ohio regional editor for GateHouse Media, which purchased the Beacon Journal last year.
Shearer will continue leading the regional network of GateHouse Media newsrooms in Ohio.
Winges is retiring after more than 11 years as editor and 37 years at the newspaper in various positions.
