Police: Man breaks into home, girl escapes

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Cranston police say surveillance cameras helped them identify and arrest a 50-year-old man who broke into a home while a juvenile female was there.

Authorities said Saturday that John Sarandrea, of Cranston, was charged with breaking and entering for Wednesday’s incident.

Police say the girl escaped to safety after the intruder broke in. Officials say Sarandrea stole several items and fled before police arrived.

Officers say videos from area surveillance cameras helped identify Sarandrea’s vehicle and led to his arrest. Police say he has a long history of break-ins and is on probation in several cases.

Sarandrea is being detained until a court hearing on Oct. 24. A judge assigned his case to the public defenders’ office. No one answered the phone at the public defenders’ office Saturday.
