Wilson No. 1 Pick in WNBA’s Draft
A’ja Wilson was the top pick in the WNBA draft by the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday night.
The South Carolina star post player will bolster the relocated franchise’s frontcourt. The Aces, who moved to Las Vegas from San Antonio this past winter, had the first pick for the second straight season.
Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell went second to the Indiana Fever.
The Chicago Sky took guards Diamond DeShields, who spent the season playing professionally in Turkey, and Gabby Williams of Connecticut with the next two picks. UCLA guard Jordin Canada was selected fifth by the Seattle Storm.
Magic, Knicks fire coaches
Frank Vogel was brought to Orlando two years ago with hopes he could get the Magic back to the playoffs, and stop the spinning of the revolving door to their coaches’ office.
Neither of those things happened.
Vogel was fired by the Magic about 10 hours after the team wrapped up a 25-57 season, its sixth consecutive losing year. Vogel, who had one year left on his contract, went 54-110 in his two years with Orlando.
The New York Knicks are preaching patience but looking for progress. Jeff Hornacek got caught in the middle. The Knicks fired their coach, shortly after finishing a 29-53 season. They lost more than 50 games and missed the playoffs both seasons under Hornacek.
Favre talks concussions
Brett Favre says he might have had “thousands” of concussions during his Hall of Fame career.
The three-time NFL MVP who played from 1992-2010 and was known for his aggressive approach to football said on NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Today” that he is experiencing short-term memory issues.
Favre, 48, has become an advocate for concussion research and said he had three or four known concussions during his lengthy career, which spanned 302 regular-season games and 24 in the postseason.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been charged with felony domestic violence after being accused of dragging his girlfriend and punching her in the head, leaving her with a ruptured eardrum, authorities said. The Santa Clara County District Attorney charged Foster, when he was also arraigned in San Jose. A judge ordered him not to have any contact with his girlfriend.
Sabbatini opens with a 64
Rory Sabbatini shot a 7-under 64 for his lowest round ever at Harbour Town Golf Links and a two-stroke lead in the RBC Heritage, with top-ranked Dustin Johnson five shots behind.
Matt Kuchar, Billy Horschel, Chesson Hadley and John Huh shot 66s. Johnson had a run of four straight birdies in the middle of his round, but ended up with a 69.
He was tied for 20th.
Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was suspended for one game for an illegal check to the head of Vegas Golden Knights forward William Carrier during Game 1 of the first-round playoff series. Doughty will miss Game 2 on Friday night in Las Vegas. He delivered the blow at 9:58 of the third period, sending Carrier to the locker room for the remainder of the game.
