Jr. Aces set to host Class L Region

Jr. Aces to host SIJHSAA Region

Mount Carmel will host a Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class L Region. The Region will feature four teams. The two semifinal games will be played on Saturday, Feb. 3. The first game of the day will tip at 9:30 a.m. with the Jr. Aces taking on Carmi. Following that game will be Olney versus Flora at 11 a.m.

The two winners from the Saturday session will return on Monday for the Region championship. The winner of Monday will advance to Rend Lake College as one of eight teams in the Class L championship tournament.

The Region 8 winner will face the winner from Region 2 in the final quarterfinal game for Class L. Region 2 will be played at Marion featuring West Frankfort, Massac County, Harrisburg and the host Marion.

Berberich hired as Lady Aces soccer coach

At Monday’s Mount Carmel school board meeting, Ed Berberich was hired as the school’s first girls varsity soccer coach. Berberich is hired as a volunteer coach. He is also the Aces’ boys soccer coach. The Lady Aces will be in their first season as a soccer program since the school board recently added the sport to the varsity ranks.

Mount Carmel No. 2 seed

Carmi will host the boys NEC seventh-grade tournament Saturday. Olney is the No.1 seed. They’ll face the winner of No. 4 Carmi against No. 5 Fairfield, while will be played at 9 a.m. Mount Carmel is the No.2 seed and will take on the winner of No. 3 Flora and No. 6 Albion at 10:15 a.m.

The first semifinal contest featuring No. 1 Olney will be played at 11:30 a.m. and the second with No. 2 Mount Carmel right after at approximately 12:45 p.m. The third-place game featuring the two losing teams from the semifinals will be played at 3:30 p.m. with the championship tipping off at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Lady Rockets’ C-Team win

MOUNT CARMEL - The St. Mary’s C-Team defeated Jasper at home, 42-12, in girls basketball action.

The Lady Rockets trailed 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. St. Mary’s pulled ahead, 16-8, at the break and 28-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Madison Stevens scored a game-high 18 points to lead St. Mary’s Nora Jones added 10 points, Sarah McCorkle finished with six points, while Lily Keepes pitched in four points with Ava Turner and Kali Walker each contributed two points.

Ava Best was the Lady Polecats’ top scorer with six points

The Lady Rockets’ C-Team returns to action Friday when they travel to Olney to take on St. Joe. The St. Mary’s girls’ team will play at 6 p.m., followed by the St. Mary’s Rockets’ boy’s C Team game.
