Evacuation lifted near WVa wastewater treatment plant
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — An evacuation in an area surrounding a West Virginia wastewater treatment plant was lifted Tuesday, and residents were returning to their homes, emergency officials said.
Workers neutralized the hazardous materials involved in the incident Monday in Martinsburg and finished air monitoring by 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said in a news release.
The area was evacuated in response to an accidental mixture of chemicals during a tanker offload, police said earlier.
Fire and police officials were available to help residents with home ventilation and answer questions, the release said.
The West Virginia State Emergency Operations Center will continue to monitor and provide support to Berkeley County agencies until the incident is resolved, the release said.
