NEW MILFORD — A man died after being hit by a car while crossing Route 7 Thursday night.

John Murphy, 60, was hit by a Chevrolet Cruze driven by 20-year-old New Milford resident Kevin Roman around 9:30 p.m.

The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of Route 7 in front of the WHEELS Citgo gas station at 61 Danbury Road.

Upon arrival, police said they found Murphy unresponsive and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both directions of Route 7 were shut down for several hours between Pickett District Road and Sunny Valley Road as officers investigated the accident.

Police Chief Spencer Cerruto said Roman remained at the scene and has “cooperated fully” with investigators.

About an hour after police responded to the scene, residents took to Facebook with comments and speculation. Several emphasized the need for sidewalks, crosswalks and lighting in the area of the accident.

There are no crosswalks in the area where Murphy was hit.

The investigation continues and Cerruto said the New Milford Accident Reconstruction Team is “in process of conducting a thorough and methodical investigation.”
