Stamford man charged with pistol whipping cabbie

February 4, 2019

STAMFORD — A Stamford man was charged with allegedly pistol whipping a cab driver while the two were in the midst of a dispute back in October.

Sgt. Kenneth Jarrett said the incident began harmlessly at about 10:30 p.m. Oct. 5 when a man walked up to a cabbie parked at Grenhart and Wilson roads and asked the driver how his night was going. The driver shook his head and said no. Then the man launched into a rage accusing the driver of throwing trash into his yard. The dispute moved from being verbal to physical when, the cabbie said, the man produced a gun and struck him with it and also struck him with a piece of wood.

Police investigators looked into the allegations and identified the man as Michael Macchio, 36, of Grenhart Road, Jarrett said.

Macchio was charged with second-degree assault and released after he posted a $100,000 court-appearance bond.
