Local Roundup: Fitchburg Surges Past Patriots

FITCHBURG -- After entering halftime facing a four-point deficit, the Red Raiders showed exactly what they’re made of.

The Fitchburg High boys’ basketball team outscored visiting North Middlesex Regional 48-18 in the second half en route to its first win of the season, a 66-40 victory on Thursday night.

Bryan Beltre led the way with 16 points and Zachary Scott added 12 points for the Red Raiders (1-3). Will McCarthy had nine points and Dominic Yancy scored seven for North Middlesex.

Jakai Alexandre (26 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists) and Keegan Sharp (25 points, 12 rebounds) each had a big night in the impressive win for St. Bernard’s (2-1). The Bernardians are off for the winter break before next hosting Worcester Tech on Friday, Dec. 28. Sophomore Tom Simmons scored 19 points to lead Notre Dame Prep (2-3), of Fitchburg, in defeat. Dazeen Figueroa added 13 points for the Bernardians.

Christopher Costich (12 points) and Jason Reynolds (11 points) played well for the Blue Knights (1-5) in the loss.

Francisco Rodriguez scored 16 points and Jonathan Poole and Sebastian Rodriguez added 14 each for Sizer (2-3).

Girls’ basketball

Kylie Lison had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Spartans to victory on their home court in the opening round of the Wachusett League Holiday Tournament in Ashburnham. Oakmont Regional advances to face Narragansett at 7 p.m. Friday in the tournament’s championship game. Clinton (2-2) and Athol will meet at 5:30 p.m. in Friday’s consolation contest.

Leah Pelkey was also strong with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Hannah Cravedi fueled a stellar team defensive effort with four steals. As a team, Oakmont (3-0) finished with 21 steals and just eight turnovers.

Erica Regan scored 16 points and Emily St. Thomas added 15 of her own as Monty Tech (3-0) held off Lunenburg (3-1) in a tight contest. The Blue Knights were led by Grace Hedlund, with 15 points, in defeat.
