HBO and Garry Shandling’s ‘Larry Sanders Show’ Lead CableACE Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Garry Shandling’s Home Box Office series ``The Larry Show″ led winners during Saturday night’s 17th Annual CableACE Awards, including trophies for best comedy, acting, directing and writing.

HBO scored big with 27 wins, followed by Showtime with seven, Comedy Central with five, The Disney Channel, The Learning Channel and Turner Network Television with four apiece and A&E Television Networks, Cable News Network, MTV: Music Television and TBS Superstation with three each.

Seventeen CableACE awards were presented during a two-hour TNT special hosted by Mary Tyler Moore live from the Wiltern Theatre. Awards in 38 non-televised categories were presented Friday night at the House of Blues.

Programs winning two awards were HBO’s ``The Burning Season, ``Citizen X,″ ``Dennis Miller Live,″ ``Dream On,″ ``HBO Comedy Hour: Kathy & Mo, The Dark Side″ and ``One Survivor Remembers″; MTV’s ``Eagles: Hell Freezes Over″; The Travel Channel’s ``Lonely Planet: Morocco″; Showtime’s ``The Outer Limits″ and ``Picture Windows: Two Nudes Bathing″; ESPN’s ``NFL GameDay″ and ``Sunday Night NFL.″

Three special awards were also presented.

The Golden CableACE was presented to The Learning Channel and Time Warner Cable for ``KNOWTV: Changing What, Why and How You Watch″ in recognition of critical viewing workshops for teachers and parents.

The Governors Award was presented to Kay Koplovitz, founder, president and chief executive officer of USA Networks in recognition of her pioneering vision.

The Creators Award was presented to A&E for its signature series ``Biography,″ honored for defining cable TV as a first-rate source of quality programming.
