YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) _ Nobuo Serizawa birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with Brent Franklin on Sunday to win the Yokohama Open.
Serizawa sank a 3-foot putt for the winning birdie on the 595-yard, par-5 18th hole. Franklin, a Canadian, parred the hole.
Serizawa shot a 67 and Franklin a 69 in the final round, leaving them tied at 275 after 72 holes. Noboru Sugai shot a 68 to finish third with a 276 total.
MATSUOMURA, Japan (AP) - Jennifer Sevil of Australia shot a 72 Sunday to win the Appi Cup golf tournament by five strokes.
Sevil, who started the final round with a six-stroke lead, finished with a 54-hole total of 208, 8-under-par.
Norimi Terasawa shot a 69 to finish second with a 213 total.
HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong advanced to the final of the Davis Cup Asia- Oceania Group 2 competition on Sunday with a 3-2 victory over Sri Lanka.
Michael Walker beat Arjun Fernando 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 to give Hong Kong an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the best-of-5 match series.
In the final singles match, Sri Lanka’s Umesh Wallooppilla defeated Hong Kong’s Mark Bailey 6-1, 6-2. The match was reduced to two sets because the result did not affect the overall outcome.
Hong Kong will meet Taiwan in the group final in September. The winner advances to Group 1 next year.
SURFERS PARADISE, Australia (AP) - Shinji Kawashima of Japan won the Gold Coast marathon Sunday, beating training partner Koichi Takahashi by 36 seconds.
Kawashima completed the course in 2 hours, 14 minutes, one second. Sergei Rozum of the Soviet Union was third in 2:14.42, followed by Australian Sean Quilty in 2:14.59 and American Mark Conover in 2:15.03.
It was only the third marathon for Kawashima, who broke away from the pack with about five miles remaining.
″I was feeling good and I felt that was the time to make a move,″ Kawashima said. ″When I hit the front, I didn’t think I would be able to last but I’m glad things turned out the way they did.″
Jackie Hallam of Australia won the women’s race in 2:36.21.
SINGAPORE (AP) - Bambang Suprianto of Indonesia beat countryman Fung Permadi 15-9, 15-8 Sunday to win the men’s singles title at the Konica Cup badminton championship.
Huang Hua of China defeated countrywoman Zhou Lei 11-5, 7-11, 11-2 for the women’s singles title.
