Stratford finishes fifth at state golf tournament
The Stratford boys golf team earned a fifth-place finish at the UIL Class 6A state tournament, merely two strokes from a medal spot May 20-21 at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.
The Spartans carded a 600 during the two-day tournament, finishing just behind Austin Westlake’s second team (598) and San Antonio Johnson (599). Stratford followed an opening-round 303 with a 297.
The Spartans had a slightly higher score than last year’s 598 at state but finished four spots higher. Three of their five scorers returned from last year - 2018 state champion Matthew Riedel, Drew Murdock and Jack Kelly.
Murdock made a dramatic improvement from his previous state appearance, cutting 16 strokes from his score. He was tied for the lead with a first-round 69 and finished with a 145, tied for 12th.
Riedel played at state for the third time, carding rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149. Dennis Butts (83-72—155), Carson Malik (79-76—155) finished the team scoring for the Spartans, with Kelly (79-79—158) not far off the pace.
Austin Westlake won the team championship with a 565, finishing 20 strokes ahead of Austin Vandegrift.
