New members welcomed

Leslie Gossage and Sarah Richard were inducted into the Beta Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Gossage is a Title 1 reading teacher at Mountain View Elementary School, and Sarah Richard is an intermediate learning support teacher at the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center.

Pat Carpenter, membership chairman and second vice president, with Gail Franko and President Jeanette Saulo, performed a candlelight induction ceremony.

Gossage and Richard were escorted to the presentation table by Cindy Reynolds, one of their sponsors. They lit a red candle, signed the chapter register and received membership certificates and key pins.

Gossage and Richard received a single red rose from their sponsor to symbolize friendship, loyalty and helpfulness.

Saulo shared an inspirational message for the 2018-2019 bienium and presented immediate past chapter president Dr. Nancy Simon with a gift as a thank you for her fine service also during the ceremony.

A business meeting where several committees reported on their projects was also held followed by dinner. The hostess committee is chaired by Peggy Walker and assisted by Lois Frantz.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honor society for women educators with more than 82,000 members around the world. Beta Rho is one of 63 chapters in Pennsylvania.

The chapter has several events ahead. The chapter’s Creative Arts Retreat will be held March 29 to April 1 at the Olmstead Manor in Ludlow. State President Barbara Gasperini will attend the Tri-Chapter meeting on May 18 at Shadowbrook Resort in Tunkhannock. The state convention will be held from June 14 to 16 at the Nittany Lion Inn in State College; and the Northeast Regional Conference will be held July 30 to Aug. 1 in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Stars in stripes

Wilkes University student Wyatt Owen Sebring of Milford was commissioned and received the rank of second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Sebring will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering during Wilkes’ Winter Commencement Ceremony in January.

He will be stationed at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma, to receive pilot training.

The commissioning ceremony was held Dec. 6 by Air Force ROTC Detachment 752 at the university.

High notes

Jerry Murray was awarded Man of the Year during the John Mitchell Day Ceremony at the Cathedral Cemetery.

Murray, a member of the AOH Hook O’Malley Division 4, and Scranton Federation of Teachers was awarded for his dedication to the union and his community.

He is a Clarks Summit resident. Division 4 has celebrated John Mitchell Day for the past 14 years.
