Somerset man accused of attempting to solicit sex from 13-year-old
A 29-year-old Somerset man was arraigned Friday by the state attorney general’s office on charges that he attempted to meet a 13-year-old for sex.
According to a probable-cause affidavit, Matthew Ross Delano, Cannell Drive, contacted a child he learned was 13 on Instagram and called that child “Hott.” Using the account name MattJackson44, he encouraged the child, who lives in Somerset Township, to sneak out of the house and meet him the evening of Aug. 22.
The child went to the Somerset Borough Police Department and reported the exchange, police said.
On Oct. 11, the child and guardian consented for an investigator at the attorney general’s office to use the child’s cellular device and go undercover pretending to be the child, according to a criminal complaint.
On the same day, the investigator contacted the Instagram account owner and received a cellphone number, which was used to track down the owner, Delano.
Delano agreed to meet the person, whom he thought was a 13-year-old, at the Georgian Place Thursday to have sex, according to the affidavit. Police said he was found sitting in a black Chevrolet Silverado in the parking lot at approximately 6:25 p.m.
Delano was charged with unlawful contact with a minor, attempted statutory sexual assault and criminal use of a communication facility.
He is in the Somerset County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Oct. 30 before District Judge Ken Johnson in Somerset.
