Margaret Hughes-Wennekamp, 91, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at Mory’s Haven in Columbus.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Patrick Sparling and the Rev. Chris Ramstad officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Gass Haney Funeral Home and will continue on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Margaret Hughes-Wennekamp was born on Nov. 27, 1927, to Walter and Viola (Joseph) Wergin in Hampton, Nebraska. The family moved to Columbus and Margaret graduated from Kramer High School in 1945. Margaret was united in marriage to Kenneth Hughes on Dec. 9, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. The couple farmed near Monroe until moving to Columbus in 1982. After Kenneth’s death in 1989, Margaret was united in marriage to Melvin Wennekamp on April 9, 1994, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. Margaret was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and cooking.
Margaret is survived by son Roger Hughes of Columbus, Nebraska; grandson, Jason Hughes of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister, Eileen (Roy) Knoll of Tuscon, Arizona; brother, Ken Wergin of Craig, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Elsie Wergin of Columbus, Nebraska and Juna Wergin of Greenwood, South Carolina; brother-in-law, Harold Nansel of Loveland, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Viola Wergin; first husband, Kenneth Hughes; second husband; Melvin Wennekamp; daughter, Linda Hughes; son, Keith Hughes; sister, Bernice Nansel; and brothers, Willard, Paul and Donnie Wergin.
