Lakeside students excel at state music festival

LAKE MILLS -- Lakeside Lutheran High School has announced that 14 entries involving more than 50 student musicians received first- or second-place medals at the WSMA State Solo & Ensemble Festival at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater April 27.

Eight of those 14 state-qualifying entries earned a first, including the Warrior Percussion Ensemble, comprised of Jadyn Duddeck, Rachel Mayer, Ella Collins, Madelaine Triebold, Ella Butzine, Emily Meiller, Evelyn Schauer, Ryan Preskar, Hannah Tucek, Javin Hollis, Kyle Jaeger, Elizabeth Isham, Cody Gumz, Lauren Learned, Elijah Wohling, Caleb Hermanson, Trevor Geerdts, Joseph Balistreri, Justin Learned, Benjamin Kasper, Trevor Holzhueter, Carter Huber and Benjamin Ertman.

The show choir also earned a first. Its members are Olivia Fregien, Emma Berg, Ashley Valerio, Bronte Perkins, Samantha Anderson, Abbie DiGiovanni, Madelynn Klug, Madelyn Plitzuweit, Ben Huebner, Anna Bilitz, Sophie Griffin, Seth Hackbarth, Jacob Horta, Kyle Doering, Matthew Gunst, Justin Learned, Albert Wood, Chad Nolte, Lucas Schneider, Ben Grambsch and Connor Dobson.

In individual performances, six students were awarded a first: soprano solos, Emma Berg, Olivia Fregien and Ashley Valerio; piano solos, Madelyn Plitzuweit and Ella Collins; and musical theater, Olivia Fregien.

Taking a second-place honor was the jazz ensemble, comprised of Jadyn Duddeck, Jeremy Hathaway, Ella Butzine, Owen Schoenherr, Rachel Poyner, Annie Povich, Grace Seim, Gilbert Haw, Luke Marti, Tyler Affeld, Tyler Holzhueter, Max Thomas, Mira Parker, Cody Gumz, Nick Yaroch, Benjamin Kasper, Trevor Holzhueter, Ben Grambsch, Elizabeth Isham and Riley Schulz.

In individual performances, five students were awarded a second: piano solos, Abby Buxa, Riley Schulz and Madelaine Triebold; musical theater, Sophie Griffin; and marimba solo, Elijah Wohling.

To be eligible for state competition, the musicians were required to perform musical selections at Class A difficulty level, as well as earn a starred first rating at the WSMA District Festival held in February.
