Austin Bold FC 1, San Antonio FC 0 Late goal adds to winless SAFC’s misery
A new opponent, but a familiar early-season result for San Antonio FC.
Forward Kleber Giacomazzi scored in the 78th minute as expansion team Austin Bold FC topped SAFC 1-0 on Saturday night in a United Soccer League contest at Bold Stadium in Austin.
“We worked hard for 90 minutes and came up short at the end of it,” SAFC coach Darren Powell said. “We are bitterly disappointed, and we want to make sure we learn and move past it and get ready for our match next Saturday. Every player is putting in a lot of effort to represent this club. We’re working hard but we need to find ways to win games, and if everybody keeps up their work ethic and commitment the positive results will come.”
It was Austin Bold FC’s first win. SAFC (0-3-1) remained winless after conceding a tying or winning goal in the latter stages of a match for the third time this season. SAFC yielded a goal in extra time vs. Phoenix Rising FC on March 9 in a 3-3 draw and allowed the game-winner in the 86th minute in a 1-0 road loss vs. Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on March 23.
“You get zero points for feeling sorry for yourself,” SAFC midfielder Michael Lahoud said. “It always hurts to fall short when you put in a good performance. This was a night-and-day difference from our performance last weekend, and it was more true to the version of a team we are. This is a game of details, and when you play a group of veterans like that it’s always going to be a tight game. We have to learn from it and take our chances and punish teams when we can.”
In a contest in which the local club had the upper hand in terms of possession and shots (14-8), it once again came away empty where it mattered most — on the scoreboard.
SAFC was shut out for the second straight game and is scoreless since Jack Barmby converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute of a 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers 2 on March 16, a span of 242 minutes.
A former SAFC standout, goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, recorded the latest shutout. He played two seasons with the Alamo City squad, earning USL goalkeeper of the year in 2017 after collecting 12 shutouts during a season that ended with SAFC reaching the Western Conference semifinals.
With the contest poised to end in a scoreless draw, Austin Bold FC (1-1-1) capitalized with 12 minutes left when Giacomazzi scored after a corner kick from defender Sean McFarlane.
