UB men edge Fairfield on layup at buzzer
FAIRFIELD — Bakary Camara hit a layup at the buzzer as the Bridgeport men’s basketball team edged Fairfield for an 88-86 victory in an exhibition game Friday night at Alumni Hall.
The Purple Knights trailed 45-35 at halftime, 45-35, but shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the second half, including 9-for-15 from three-point range, to get the win.
Hashem Abbas scored a game-high 22 points, including 5-for-6 from behind the arc, to lead three players in double-figure scoring for Bridgeport. Sam Joseph added 16 points and three assists and Camara scored 10 points with three steals.
Six players reached double digits in scoring for Fairfield, including all five starters. Tyler Nelson and Ferron Flavors Jr. scored 16 points apiece, Wassef Methnani posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Jonathan Kasibabu chipped in 14 points and Matija Milin and Jerome Segura each scored 10 points.
The Stags shot 34-for-56 (60.7 percent) from the floor.
Both teams open regular season play on Nov. 11 with the Purple Knights hosting Pace at 6 and Fairfield playing Penn at 1 at Webster Bank Arena.
