UVU Men’s Hoops: Wolverines host WAC showdown with Grand Canyon
Utah Valley will try to hold onto second place in the Western Athletic Conference on Saturday when it hosts preseason conference favorite Grand Canyon at the UCCU Center.
Utah Valley (4-1 WAC, 15-6 overall) had its eight-game winning streak snapped last Saturday with an 86-59 setback at New Mexico State, which now leads the league with a 5-0 record.
Grand Canyon enters Saturday’s game with a 15-6 overall record and a 4-1 league mark. Since losing to New Mexico State, 70-59, on Jan. 11, Grand Canyon has won four straight and is tied with Utah Valley for the second spot in the league’s standings. The Antelopes head into Saturday’s matinee with UVU fresh off a 96-80 victory over William Jessup on Tuesday night. Freshman forward Alessandro Lever led the team with 25 points, while senior guard Josh Braun helped with 22. Oregon transfer Casey Benson recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 assists. Braun leads the team in scoring at 14.4 points a game. Grand Canyon is averaging 75.19 points a game while limiting opponents to a 63.10 per game average. Grand Canyon was selected by both the coaches and the media to win the WAC this season in the preseason polls.
UVU’s last win against Grand Canyon was a 79-68 home victory in March of 2016.
