The courage to succeed, student honored for working through challenges

SCOTTVILLE — Tears began to well in the eyes of Mason County Central Upper Elementary Principal Kevin Kimes as he described this year’s winner of the school’s Courage of Gabe award — fifth-grader Sabrina Rice.

“It is my distinct honor and privilege to present this award to a young person who has faced some giants. Today she is standing tall and confident,” Kimes said. “In the last two years this individual has grown more socially, emotionally and academically than any student than I have been a part of in my 25 years in education.

“There exists a confidence in this person today that two years ago you wouldn’t have imagined,” he continued. “This year’s winner has indeed faced some challenges. This winner’s been able to work through these challenges and have the strength to hope.”
