Poet laureate selects poem for display on RIPTA buses
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s poet laureate has selected a Pawtucket woman’s poem to be displayed on public buses.
Poet Laureate Tina Cane selected 75-year-old Norma Jenckes poem “Ghazal Howl in Pawtucket” as part of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority’s new program Poetry in Motion RI. The Providence Journal reports Cane selected the poem out of more than 120 submissions.
The poem is written as a ghazal, a traditional style of poetry popular in the Middle East and South Asia, and Jenckes says it pays homage to Allen Ginsberg’s famed poem “Howl.”
The poem will be displayed on digital boards on RIPTA buses in January.
