Yakima taps officer from Denver for new police chief
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Yakima has picked a new police chief.
City Manager Cliff Moore introduced Matthew Murray, a lieutenant in charge of the Denver Police Department’s Community Relations department, as the city’s new police chief last week.
Moore said he based his selection on a thorough review of notes from multiple panel interviews of the city’s five candidates, an hour-long one-on-one interview, and community comment cards following a March 22 public reception.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Murray will succeed Dominic Rizzi, who led the YPD from spring 2012 until fall 2018, when Moore fired him without cause. Capt. Gary Jones continues to serve as interim chief.
Murray begins May 1.
