One person died as a result of a vehicle accident Friday at 1322 Berlin Plank Road in Somerset Township.

State police report Carl Cotter, 84, of Berlin, died from injuries he received in the 1:35 p.m. accident. Police said Cotter, who was heading toward Somerset, failed to react to a SUV that was attempting to turn left for the Somerset Veterinary Hospital.

Cotter’s minivan struck the rear of the SUV and came to rest in the middle of the road. The SUV went airborne and landed in a yard about 267 feet away.

Cotter was taken by MedStar helicopter to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the police report.

Mary Cotter, 84, of Berlin, was also in the car and transported to Conemaugh Memorial for suspected serious injuries.

Raymond and Jeanne Myers, Central City residents who were in the SUV, were taken by ambulance to UPMC Somerset for injuries with an undetermined severity.

Somerset Volunteer firefighters closed the road while crews assisted those in the accident. Somerset and Berlin EMS responded to the call.
