Former deputy gets prison for lying about LA jail beating

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy convicted of lying to federal investigators looking into the beating of a jail visitor has been sentenced to a year in prison.

A jury in January found Byron Dredd guilty of making false statements to the FBI. It marked the final conviction against each of the 22 sheriff’s deputies and officials charged in the case — including former Sheriff Lee Baca.

The US Department of Justice says the 37-year-old Dredd was sentenced on Monday.

The convictions stemmed from the 2011 beating of Gabriel Carrillo, who was visiting his brother in jail. Carrillo reportedly mouthed off while being detained for having a cellphone. He was kicked, punched, and pepper-sprayed, his face left battered and bruised.

Prosecutors said Dredd lied when he said Carrillo was the one who attacked deputies.
