School opening late as cold blast invades Alabama

November 12, 2019

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Schools and businesses as far south as the Gulf Coast states were opening late or closing because of the brutally cold weather invading the region.

About 20 school systems delayed opening across north Alabama on Tuesday because of the threat of wintry precipitation, including all the public schools around the tech center of Huntsville, Alabama.

Even more were opening late or closing in Tennessee, and a handful of businesses and schools delayed opening in Georgia.

While officials say some roads could have slicks spots from freezing rain or sleet, bitterly cold temperatures are the main problem.

Forecasters say daytime temperatures will remain in the 30s across a wide area of the South. Freeze warnings reach from eastern Texas to coastal South Carolina with overnight lows predicted in the 20s.
