Mizzou, Illinois revive football series for 2026-29

November 20, 2017

COLUMBIA, MO. • Missouri and Illinois are reviving their football series and bringing it back to their respective campuses. The two schools have agreed to a four-year series from 2026-29 and will alternate between Champaign, Ill., and Columbia each season.

The Tigers and Fighting Illini met six times in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome from 2002-2010 with the Tigers winning all six matchups, games that featured breakout performances by Brad Smith, Jeremy Maclin and Blaine Gabbert. Mizzou leads all the all-time series 17-7. The Tigers and Illini played a similar four-year series at their home stadiums from 1991-94.

The new series begins in Champaign on Sept. 26, 2026 then returns to Columbia on Sept. 18, 2027. It will mark the first time Mizzou has hosted Illinois at Memorial Stadium since a 31-3 victory in 1993. The teams meet again in Champaign on Sept. 16, 2028 then finish the series Sept. 15, 2029 in Columbia.

“This is another opportunity to renew a great football rivalry that we believe Tiger fans everywhere will be excited about,” MU athletics director Jim Sterk said.

Adding Illinois to the schedule will satisfy the Southeastern Conference mandate that every school play at least one team every season from another Power 5 conference. In upcoming seasons, the Tigers also play Power 5 nonconference opponents Purdue (Big Ten), West Virginia (Big 12), Kansas State (Big 12) and Boston College (ACC).

Also on Monday, Missouri announced that is has completed its 2020 schedule with the addition of a Nov. 21 home game against Louisiana-Lafayette. That was a convenient set up for the two schools considering LLU’s new athletics director is Bryan Maggard, who for years worked in Mizzou’s administration and was in charge of MU’s football scheduling.
