Elderly Madison Township man sitting in road killed in hit-and-run crash, police say

MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — An 87-year-old man suffering from dementia died early Friday after being hit by a car as he sat in the middle of the street, police said.

The crash happened about 11:55 p.m. Thursday in the 7700 block of Middle Ridge Road between County Line and Arcola roads, police said. The man later died at MetroHealth.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, sat in the middle of the road. A car swerved and missed him, then stopped to check on him, police said.

Another car driving east on Middle Ridge hit the man and sped off, according to police. A description of the car was not immediately available, police said.

Other cars surrounded the man in order to block traffic before police arrived.

An ambulance took the man to Lake Health’s Madison Emergency Department. An emergency helicopter flew the man to MetroHealth.

The man’s family members told police he suffered from dementia and had left his home their knowledge and were unsure why he left, police said.

No arrests have been made in the case.
