Sandwich driver loses control on icy road, hits ComEd truck

A Sandwich driver lost control of her vehicle on an icy road and crashed into a ComEd truck on Saturday evening in Pierce Township.

Dawn Niles, 44, of Sandwich was driving a Chevy Silverado north on Somonauk Road, north of Keslinger Road, when she lost control on the ice-covered road, went into a ditch and struck a ComEd truck, according to a report from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

The ComEd truck was already in a ditch, as a repairman had been called to replace a pole that was had broken from a separate crash two hours earlier.

Zack Scepurek, 24, of DeKalb, lost control of his Dodge Dakota in the same area on the icy road, went into the west side ditch and hit the ComEd power pole, snapping it, according to a report from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Scepurek was uninjured and the Dodge Dakota was able to be driven from the scene.

Niles’ Chevy came to rest on the passenger side of the truck. Niles and a juvenile passenger were able to be removed. Hellen Heath, 73, of Sandwich, was removed and transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries, according to the report.

The ComEd truck sustained minor damage. No citations were issued, according to the report.
