Athletes of the Week: Oct. 24

Kayla Thompson

Maple Mountain

Sr., goalkeeper

The Maple Mountain girls soccer team had plenty of experience playing in overtime games this year — but penalty kick shootouts are even more of a challenge.

To win the 5A state title, the Golden Eagles battled through and won both their semifinal against East and their final against Timpanogos in shootouts, thanks in large part to Thompson’s steadiness in goal.

Thompson, who is committed to play soccer for Gonzaga, saved a number of big shots during regulation of both matches to put her team in position to win, then made enough plays in the shootout for Maple Mountain to emerge victorious.

Lincoln Bunker

Lehi

Sr., running back/free safety

The Pioneer defense knew it had its hands full with a potent Skyline offensive attack in their regular season finale last week.

True to form, the Eagles gained a lot of yards — but thanks to Bunker and the Lehi ballhawking skills, they didn’t get many points.

Bunker spearheaded the Pioneer interception parade, getting two of the five interceptions Lehi had during the game as the Pioneers picked up the 42-14 win and secured the Region 6 title.
