St. Augustine Hunger Center needs drivers, donations to feed 21,000+ this Thanksgiving

CLEVELAND, Ohio – St. Augustine Hunger Center in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood is asking for volunteer drivers and monetary donations towards its 45-year tradition of feeding the hungry on Thanksgiving.

This year, Sister Corita Ambro and her small army of volunteers expect to feed more than 21,000 people at St. Augustine, 2486 West 14th St., and at 14 shelters in Downtown Cleveland, on the East Side and in Lorain County. In addition, they will pack, serve and deliver more than 10,000 meals to homebound residents and those with disabilities, in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, and Summit Counties.

Ambro, who has overseen the Thanksgiving outreach for about 25 years, needs 30 to 50 more drivers to help deliver those meals on Thursday.

“This year we face a real difficulty in being able to provide this meal, as we are struggling financially to meet the daily needs of our Hunger Center, while at the same time trying to raise money for the Thanksgiving meal,” said Father Joseph McNulty, pastor of St. Augustine, in a written statement. “We need your help.”

“Donations of turkeys or funds to purchase more turkeys are being sought in hopes that enough can be raised to serve everyone in need on Thanksgiving and also to continue daily meals through the winter season,” St. Augustine said in a written announcement.

Those who need those meals can call St. Augustine at 216-781-5530. That is also the number to call to volunteer or to drop off turkeys, which will be frozen and used for next year’s Thanksgiving meals.

“We can’t wait until the last minute to order, so we order it in advance, and that’s why we need the donations, to pay for the food already ordered for Thanksgiving,” she said.

Donations can be made via a secure website at www.staugustine-west14.org or mailed to St. Augustine Church, 2486 West 14th St., Cleveland, OH 44113.

On Thanksgiving Day, a hot breakfast will be served starting at 8 a.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2592 W. 14th St.
