Attempt to Replace Union Denied
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The National Mediation Board has denied a petition by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association seeking to replace a rival union representing mechanics at United Airlines.
The board, which regulates labor issues in the airline and railroad industries, issued its ruling on appeal Thursday, saying that AMFA did not present authorization cards signed by 50 percent of eligible voters, as required to trigger an election.
AMFA had appealed the board’s initial decision, dismissing the application ``due to insufficient interest.″ The application was filed March 30 to replace the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
``By no means are we giving up,″ said O.V. Delle-Femine, AMFA’s national director, who claimed the union met the threshold for signed cards, but that the board refused to accept them.
