April 2, 1989

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) _ Kenny Williams drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single and minor leaguer Paul Wenson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers concluded their exhibition season with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox Sunday.

Minor leaguer Mike Schwabe, the fifth of seven Tiger pitchers, got credit for the win.

John Dopson, 2-3, gave up all three Tigers runs on four hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Boston took a 2-0 lead in the second when Jim Rice singled off Paul Gibson and rode home on Nick Esasky’s third homer.

Detroit scored in the fifth when Alan Trammell reached on an error by Boston right fielder Danny Heep, moved up on Fred Lynn’s single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Nokes.

In the sixth, Mike Heath reached on an infield single, moved up on walks to Billy Bean and Torey Lovullo, then scored the tying run on Dave Bergman’s sacrifice fly. Williams singled up the middle to drive in Bean.

The Tigers finished the spring with a 15-16-1 record. The Red Sox were 12-19.
