Four Killed, 19 Injured In 14-Vehicle Pileup

July 26, 1987

VINTON, La. (AP) _ A tractor-trailer rammed into a car Saturday, causing it to explode and killing its four occupants and triggering a 14-vehicle pileup that injured 19 people, state police said.

The accident on Interstate 10 just east of Vinton occured after heavy smoke from a fire burning on a median strip drifted into the westbound lane, causing traffic to slow, said State Police Sgt. Russell Haman.

″The traffic slowed and when it slowed, it caused a chain-reaction accident,″ Haman said. He said the driver, a woman, was not injured.

The four passengers in the car hit by the tractor-trailer were killed when their vehicle became engulfed in flames, he said.

″Twelve cars and two tractor-trailers were involved,″ the officer said.

The 19 injured people were taken to West Calcasieu Parish Hospital in nearby Sulphur, where all were treated and released, said nursing supervisor Gwen Clifton.

The westbound lane of the highway was closed for more than an hour as wreckers cleared cars, auto parts and glass, authorities said.

No charges had been filed late Saturday, said State Police Lt. James Hall.
