Deputy fired, accused of punching handcuffed suspect
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says he has fired a deputy who punched a handcuffed man.
News outlets report that Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony announced the firing of 26-year-old Kevin Fanti on Friday.
Officials say a security video shows Fanti punching the 19-year-old man, who was in line last month to be booked into the county jail.
The handcuffed man had been arrested on suspicion of resisting an officer without violence and obstructing a criminal investigation. Tony says Fanti didn’t arrest the man and wasn’t involved in his case.
Tony says he is turning the case over to the State Attorney’s Office to determine whether Fanti should face criminal charges.
Fanti had worked out of the Pompano Beach district. He was hired in April 2018.
