Lamar men lose to Texas State
Lamar men’s basketball couldn’t stick with Texas State in the team’s CollegeInsider.com Tournament first round game, losing 70-60 on Thursday at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos.
The Cardinals shot just 40 percent against a stingy Texas State defense as the team had just one player, freshman Tyrin Atwood, finish in double figures in scoring.
Lamar held its own for the first 13 minutes of the game but, was doomed by poor shooting the rest of the half.
The Cardinals made just one shot over the final 6:59 of the first half as Texas State used a 16-5 run to grab a 35-23 halftime lead.
Central product Nijal Pearson, who led Texas State with 18 points, helped the Bobcats grow their lead in the second half.
Pearson hit five second-half 3-pointers - including three in a minute - as Texas State gained its largest lead at 17 points with 7:41 left.
Atwood, a fellow Central product, led Lamar with 11 points and Nederland product Colton Weisbrod added seven points.
The Cardinals finished their season 19-15, a win away from their first 20-win season since 2011-12.
