Area churches put on pancake dinner to celebrate Mardi Gras before Lent

February 15, 2018

HUNTINGTON — Churches throughout the Tri-State filled up parishioners and area residents with pancake dinners Tuesday to celebrate Mardi Gras ahead of Lent, a period of fasting between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

Also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras is a popular day for pancakes because they historically became a popular way to use up rich foods like eggs, milk and sugar before Lent.

Beverly Hills United Methodist Church in Huntington was one of the churches that hosted an annual pancake dinner, using donations to benefit less fortunate families in the community through the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.
