From the Masters: Arnold Palmer honored as Player and Nicklaus get things started
AUGUSTA -- The 2017 Masters tournament is underway. Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus served as the honorary starters for this year.
Arnold Palmer’s green jacket sat a few feet away on a chair as things kicked off. The late Palmer served as an honorary starter for several years. His widow, Kathleen, was present too as The King continued to loom large at this year’s tournament.
“Arnold Palmer was more than The King, a title he justifiably deserved by virtue of his four Masters victories and more than 70 PGA Tour and Senior Tour wins,” Augusta National Golf Club Chairman Billy Payne said on the first tee Thursday. “Arnold Palmer was my friend. He was your friend. Despite all of his fame and fortune, he always had time for all of us.”
Patrons in attendance on Thursday received a commemorative pin celebrating the life and legacy of the Palmer.
