Rockmart First United Methodist hosting BBQ event
Rockmart First United Methodist (FUM) is offering fellowship and barbecue to the county with the annual Fall Barbecue and silent auction to be held this Friday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. inside the church’s fellowship hall at 135 Church St., Rockmart.
Tickets to the event can be ordered at 770-684-6251.
Proceeds from the event will be put towards general improvements on the First United Methodist building. Purchasing a ticket covers food costs, and entitles patrons to some of the best barbecue the church has to offer.
Plates are $8 and provide customers with a pork plate, coleslaw, baked beans, bread, and dessert.
“We’ve got some veteran cooks making the barbecue,” organizer Shirley Bell said. “One is my husband who has been doing it for 30 years. We’re also doing deliveries starting at 10 a.m., so those who can’t make it down can have the barbecue catered. We’re delivering as far as Rockmart and Cedartown.”
It would benefit the church to prepare in advance, so those who are interested in ordering from the church should call their order in advance.
Food isn’t all the church has planned because the silent auction will give all attendees a fair chance to buy some goods donated by church members. Silent auctions are conducted with written bids instead of vocal bids. Bid papers are typically placed next to the desired item, and the highest bidder claims the item after all is said and done.
“Everything at the auction will be donated from church members, so there’s no telling what might be there,” Bell said. “I know we’ve got some pottery, quilts, and other crafts up for grabs.”
November’s upcoming event will mark the church’s seventh year of hosting the Fall Barbecue and silent auction. The events have served to improve the church building year after year, and FUM shows no signs of ceasing the events anytime soon.
“We do this twice a year so this will make 14 times,” Bell said.
