Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton dies
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton died late Monday night, according to a Tuesday morning email from Aiken County Chief Deputy Coroner Darryl Ables.
The coroner had been battling cancer for two years, according to the email.
Carlton’s family and friends were with him when he died, Ables said.
Carlton joined the Coroner’s Office in 1998 and was elected coroner in November 2004.
Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt, in a prepared statement, said it was an “honor and privilege” to work closely with Carlton.
“He served the citizens of this county with integrity and purpose,” Hunt continued. “I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family and the members of the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.”
Aiken County Council Chairman Gary Bunker offered condolences, as well. The chairman described Carlton as a pillar of the community and a dedicated public servant.
“It was an honor for me to work with him as both a friend and fellow elected official,” Bunker said in a prepared statement. “He will be sorely missed.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
