Man ordered jailed in overdose death of Michigan inmate
MASON, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan man has been ordered jailed without bond after his arrest on charges that he gave the opioid-withdrawal medication methadone to fellow jail inmate who died of a drug overdose in September.
Officials have charged 33-year-old Andrew Dwayne Navarre of Big Rapids with providing the medication to 39-year-old Mark Kelly Rhodus of Monroe at the Ingham County jail. Authorities say Rhodus died inside his jail cell from multiple drug intoxication, including methadone and cocaine.
The Lansing State Journal reports Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth said Navarre was known to swap the drug for food in the jail.
Navarre was arraigned in court Thursday on charges of drug delivery causing death and drug delivery. He requested a court-appointed attorney and is scheduled back in court on Tuesday.
