Man who drove to police station with child arrested for DWI

May 8, 2018

A San Miguel County man was arrested for driving drunk with his 11-year-old daughter in the car after he went to a state police office to discuss a child-custody issue, authorities said.

Ralph Garcia, 37, of Ribera, arrived at a state police office in Albuquerque about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, and police said he smelled of alcohol.

Garcia said he was dropped off at the office, but surveillance footage showed him driving into the parking lot and exiting the driver’s side of his vehicle, state police said. Sobriety tests showed evidence of impairment, resulting in his arrest for DWI and child abuse.

According to state police Lt. Elizabeth Armijo, Garcia was charged with aggravated DWI for refusing later to take a breath test.

“Regarding the child custody matter, that is a separate matter,” she wrote, adding that it will be handled by the state Children, Youth and Families Department.
