Lowell City Manager Kevin Murphy Retiring April 1

February 12, 2018 GMT

LOWELL -- City Manager Kevin Murphy, under fire in recent weeks for his handling of the new high school plans, notified the City Council Monday that he plans to retire effective April 1.

In a letter to councilors, Murphy wrote that he had been thinking about retiring since turning 65 and now feels it is time.

“Though the work is never truly completed, I am confident that what we have accomplished has met the goals that I originally set for this administration,” Murphy wrote.

Murphy’s decision comes as his support on the council erodes, exacerbated by upheaval on the high-school project.

At last Tuesday’s City Council meeting, days after state officials rejected every proposal for a new school because they all included swimming pools, Councilor Jim Milinazzo publicly declared that he is “finished as a supporter of Mr. Murphy as city manager.”
