Florida newspaper asks governor for lagoon help
MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida newspaper is putting a rare editorial on its front page, imploring Florida’s new governor to make a priority of cleaning up the nation’s most biodiverse waterway.
Florida Today put its editorial on the front page of Sunday’s paper under the headline “Gov. DeSantis: Help the Indian River Lagoon.”
Since taking office last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed to increase spending on Everglades restoration and fight the causes of red tide and slimy algae.
The editorial says the problems in the Indian River Lagoon are as urgent as any other water problem Florida is facing.
The newspaper also asks the governor to eliminate conflicts of interest involving members of the state’s water management boards.
