Pedestrian dies in Society Hill crash
SOCIETY HILL, S.C. -- One person died and a second was injured early Tuesday morning in two-vehicle crash on US 52 in Society Hill.
The 5:05 a.m. crash happened after a tractor-trailer pulling onto US 52 at the US 52/US 15 intersection became disabled and blocked both lanes of US 52, said Lance Cpl. Matt Southern, South Carolina Highway Patrol.
A person who was attempting to assist with the disabled truck was in the south-bound lane of US 52 when he and the truck were struck by a south-bound pickup truck, Southern said. The pedestrian later died of his injuries.
Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee identified the victim as Milton McGee, 47, of Society Hill. McGee was transported to a Florence area hospital where he died of his injuries.
The pickup truck driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to a Cheraw area hospital for treatment, Southern said.
The crash remains under investigation by hte Patrol and the Darlington County Coroner’s Office.
