Akron man given consecutive life sentences in killing of man, pregnant woman

RAVENNA, Ohio -- A 26-year-old man was sentenced to three consecutive life in prison without parole Wednesday in the killing of a pregnant woman and another man in Ravenna Township.

David Darnell Calhoun Jr. of Akron pleaded guilty earlier this month to three counts of aggravated murder in the Nov. 30, 2016 shooting deaths of Sara Marsh, 32, and LaShaun Sanders, 33, on Henderson Road, court documents say.

Calhoun was taken to Lorain Correctional Institution, court records say.

Sanders, who was the father of Marsh’s first child, died at the scene. Marsh, who was six to 10 weeks pregnant with her fourth child, died hours later at a hospital.

Calhoun was on the run for more than five weeks before U.S. Marshals captured him at a vacant home on Lindin Avenue in Steubenville. He was hiding in a closet.

Sanders’ niece told cleveland.com last year that Sanders knew Calhoun, but did not know why he would shoot her uncle. Marsh’s family told cleveland.com they did not know Calhoun.

A motive for the shooting was apparently a disagreement between Calhoun and Sanders, the Record-Courier reports. Marsh was a bystander.

The newspaper also reports Calhoun did not say anything before he was sentenced and spit on Portage County Common Pleas Judge Becky Doherty’s courtroom floor after he was sentenced.
