Garbage truck clips power lines, sparks small fire, outages
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A garbage truck clipped some overhead power lines north of Reno, sparking a small brush fire and temporarily leaving more than 1,000 customers without power.
Waste Management said one of its drivers called 911 but was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher in Cold Springs at about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.
All power has been restored.
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Capt. Jeff Knox told KTVN-TV they are investigating. He says they don’t know if the power lines were hanging too low or the garbage truck may have malfunctioned.
The truck dragged the lines a couple hundred feet along Brant Street, ripping the lines off of homes and sparking spot fires along the road.
