Large fire strikes Massachusetts city

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) — Dozens of firefighters battled a multi-alarm blaze south of Boston that started in one building and quickly spread to several others.

The blaze on Newport Avenue in Quincy was reported at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday by a passing taxi driver. About 20 people were evacuated from businesses and residences in the area but there were no reports of civilian injuries. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Police say several streets in the area near the Wollaston MBTA station were closed to traffic while firefighters attacked the blaze.

Flames and black smoke billowed from the building.

Fire Capt. Daniel Gorman said the fire started in a building undergoing renovations and quickly spread.

Firefighters from a half-dozen communities responded with about 20 fire engines and ladder trucks

The cause is under investigation.
