Officials: Tucson kidnap suspect fatally shot in standoff
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A kidnapping suspect was killed in a shooting involving law enforcement officers, Pima County Sheriff’s Department officials said.
Officials didn’t immediately release details on the circumstances of the shooting that occurred Tuesday at a convenience store just outside the city. But the Tucson Police Department said it stemmed from a earlier kidnapping.
The kidnapping victim was unharmed and had called 911 after being released or escaping after being driven around the city.
The suspect allegedly stole the victim’s pickup truck, and police pulled it over Tuesday morning.
No officers were injured in the shooting that occurred some time later following a standoff that included officers from the police and sheriff’s departments. The suspect was identified as Robert Cocio, 39, who had barricaded himself in the vehicle while deputies tried to communicate with him.
Law enforcement personnel at the scene attempted to save Cocio’s life after the shooting, but he died.
Both agencies are investigating.
