Report: Last Kmart in Charleston region to close; Sears in Columbia also going dark
Financially ailing retailer Sears Holdings Corp. is preparing to shutter 72 more stores to conserve cash, including the last standing Kmart discount outlet in the Charleston region, according to a news report.
Business Insider said it obtained an internal list of the closings that will take place in September.
Chicago-based Sears Holdings did not respond to request for comment late Tuesday. An employee confirmed the Summerville location is closing.
The store opened in the 1980s at 4570 Ladson Road. A Kmart on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston went out of business in March.
Sears Holdings announced previously that it will be shutting its namesake Northwoods Mall department store by the middle of this month. The adjacent Sears Auto Center already has closed.
The list that Business Insider posted showed three other closings in South Carolina: a Sears and a Sears Auto Center, both on Two Notch Road in Columbia, and a Kmart in Seneca.
